February 2011

Starting off the month with a blizzard has kept me shoveling driveways and rescheduling meetings cancelled by the snow. One bright spot is that I did get to travel to the southwest part of the state with Sue Schuble (noted birder) to check out some eagle sightings. I'd say we not only saw some eagles but other birds as well.

Eagles

Can you count how many eagles? We stopped at 90 in these trees and a few other places we checked out.

Packed up and headed out to a weekend campout with the Venture Crew at Hercules Glades past Forsyth, Mo. We hiked about 5 miles in to a campsite near a small spring on Long's Creek. After setting up camp which included the requisite warm your toes fire the Crew went down to the spring to pump water for the campout. After returning to camp we cooked chicken and Cajun rice. It was tasty. We then tried a new recipe for dessert. We took an orange and cut off the top inch, scraped out and ate the orange and then filled the hollow with yellow cake mix. After wrapping in foil we threw them in the fire for about 20 minutes. We overfilled a couple of them and the cake oozed out a little but was still good on the inside. We also learned that you need to put the 'Orange ya' Glad You Came Cake' well into the coals or it is a bit runny after 20 minutes. Anyway, the cake was good but just not enough of it. I'm thinking on trying grapefruit next time.

Hiking Out

Feb. 15th

Took a trip down to Lake Taneycomo to check out a Eagle's nest. A gracious couple let us hang out on their deck to watch the Eagles as they were on their nest. They also had several Blue Birds in the area that would hover near a feeder. I took this with a 100-400 lense with a 1.4x converter. The shutter speed was 1/2500 th of second. A special thanks to these folks that shared their love of all birds with us.
